Free demo

Free AI melody generator

Pick a key, a tempo and an instrument, and the free melody demo on this page generates a short tune you can listen to and, with some models, download as MIDI. It runs an open-source model on Hugging Face Spaces, operated by a third party, and the specific demo is still under license review.

Free demo

The free demo is temporarily unavailable. You can still read how it works below, or try the full Studio.

Third-party, open-model demo

This free demo is hosted on Hugging Face Spaces and runs an open model. It is not part of the AI Song Generator Studio, it does not use Studio credits, and its usage limits are set by Hugging Face.

Steps

How to use it

  1. Open the melody demo

Click Try free demo to load it. The first load can be slow if the Space has been idle.

  2. Choose the basics

Set or describe a key, a tempo and a time signature. If you're unsure, C major or A minor at 90 to 110 BPM in 4/4 is an easy place to start.

  3. Pick one instrument

A single clear voice such as piano, flute or a synth lead makes it easier to judge the melody itself.

  4. Generate a few short phrases

Ask for four to eight bars at a time and keep the ones with a shape you can remember.

  5. Export what you like

Save the audio, or the MIDI file if the demo provides one, and develop it in a DAW or a notation app.

Audio, MIDI or both

Melody tools come in two families. Symbolic models write notes, usually as MIDI, which you can edit, transpose and assign to any instrument. Audio models render sound directly, which is quicker to hear but harder to edit. The demo on this page may change while its license is reviewed, so check whether it offers a MIDI download before you plan your workflow around one.

What makes a melody worth keeping

A generator gives you raw material; your ear decides what survives. Most memorable melodies grow from a short motif that repeats with small changes, so listen for a two-bar idea you can hum back after hearing it once.

  • Range: melodies that stay within about an octave are easier to sing and remember.
  • Contour: a mix of steps and a few leaps sounds intentional, while constant leaps sound random.
  • Repetition: state the motif, repeat it, then vary its ending, a pattern often called question and answer.
  • Rhythm: a distinctive rhythm can carry a melody even when the notes are simple.

Licensing caveats for free melody models

Some open melody models were trained on large collections of MIDI files that carry non-commercial license terms, even when the model weights themselves have a permissive license. Lawyers disagree about how far such terms reach, which is one reason the demo on this page is still under review. Until you have checked the model card, treat melodies from a free model as material for practice and private sketches.

Practical limits of the melody demo

Melody models are lighter than full song models, but they share the same hosting constraints.

  • Shared hardware: each run uses some of the limited free GPU time Hugging Face gives visitors who aren't signed in.
  • Short outputs: expect phrases and short pieces rather than full arrangements.
  • Model quirks: some models lean toward particular styles or instruments, and random starts can wander.
  • Third-party control: the Space can sleep, change or disappear, and we mark it as unavailable when that happens.

Melody work in the paid Studio

The AI Song Generator Studio doesn't have a dedicated melody generator yet; one is planned once its quality has been validated. Paid subscribers can already get melodic material in other ways: generate an instrumental where one lead instrument carries the tune, upload a melody you recorded and use Add Instrumental to build an accompaniment around it, then extend or restyle the result. Stem splitting can also separate instrument groups, such as keys or synths, from a generated track so you can study the parts.

Prompts

Prompts to try

Starting points you can paste into Create and adjust. Specific details — tempo, instruments, mood, structure — give the most control.

  1. Music-box lullaby

Simple 8-bar melody in C major for music box, 84 BPM, 3/4 time, gentle, mostly stepwise, ends on the home note

Asking for stepwise motion and a resolved ending keeps it singable.

  2. Folk fiddle phrase

Lively 4-bar fiddle melody in D major, 112 BPM, 6/8 jig feel, repeats once with a different ending

A repeat with a new ending builds a question-and-answer phrase.

  3. Minor-key synth hook

Catchy synth lead hook in A minor, 100 BPM, 4/4, a short repeated two-bar motif with a rising answer

A short motif is easy to develop into a chorus later.

  4. Cinematic theme seed

Slow, hopeful horn theme in E-flat major, 70 BPM, one wide leap at the start then mostly stepwise, 8 bars

An opening leap can make a theme feel heroic.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I download a MIDI file from the free melody generator?
Only if the model in the demo produces MIDI. Symbolic melody models usually offer a .mid download, while audio models give you a sound file instead. The demo may change while its license is reviewed, so check the output options when you load it.
Can I hum a melody and have AI finish it?
Not in this demo. In the paid Studio you can upload a recording of a melody you made and build an accompaniment around it with Add Instrumental. A dedicated hum-to-song workflow isn't available yet.
Can I use a generated melody in a commercial song?
Check the model card first. Some open melody models were trained on data with non-commercial terms, and a free demo can't clear rights for you. Melodies you write or substantially rework yourself are on firmer ground.
Is a melody generator the same as an AI song generator?
No. A melody generator gives you a single musical line or a short phrase. A song generator produces a full arrangement, often with vocals. Many people use a melody tool to find a hook, then build the song around it.
Does the AI Song Generator Studio have a melody generator?
Not yet. It is planned after quality testing. Today the Studio can generate instrumentals led by one instrument and build an accompaniment around a melody you upload.
Is it free to make tunes online here?
Yes. The melody demo costs nothing and needs no account. Hugging Face limits free GPU time per visitor each day, so heavy use may have to wait.
