Alternatives
BandLab alternatives: a DAW and an AI song generator do different jobs
BandLab is mainly a multitrack recording studio with AI helpers, while AI Song Generator generates complete songs from a description or your lyrics, so it is a different kind of tool rather than a drop-in replacement. Many people searching for sites like BandLab actually want one of the two jobs, and some use both.

What BandLab is built for
BandLab is a browser and mobile multitrack DAW. Its free tier includes a 16-track Studio, basic effects, 436 virtual instruments, a sampler, drum machine and looper, a few free beats and samples each week, three Splitter separations a day, six AutoPitch effects and mastering with four presets. The homepage describes unlimited multi-track projects and free cloud storage.
Around the studio, BandLab offers collaboration with up to 50 people on a project, online mastering, royalty-free loops and samples under the BandLab Sounds name, and, on Pro and Max, distribution to major streaming platforms while keeping 100% of earnings. It runs in a web browser and on iOS and Android, and membership also opens the Cakewalk Next and Cakewalk Sonar desktop tools.
BandLab AI tools versus full song generation
BandLab lists a set of AI helpers: Splitter, AI Harmonizer on Max, Audio-to-MIDI, Smart Tools that extend, add layers or recompose MIDI, Voice Cleaner, AutoMix, an FX Preset Generator and a Voice Changer with 17 voices, most of them on Pro and Max. SongStarter is described as an AI-powered tool that generates beats and melodies as a starting idea.
These tools assist a person who is building a track by hand. AI Song Generator works the other way round: you describe a song in Simple mode, or paste your own lyrics up to 5,000 characters with a style line in Custom mode, and it returns finished songs with vocals or instrumentals, often more than one variation per request. You then shape them with extend, replace section, cover and remix, add vocals or add instrumental.
BandLab membership prices next to AI Song Generator plans
BandLab itself is free to start. As of October 15, 2026, BandLab Pro is $14.99/month billed monthly with a 3-day free trial, or $99 for the first year and then $149/year billed annually. Max is $29.99/month billed monthly, shown as coming soon, or $199 for the first year and then $299/year billed annually. Pro adds a 32-track Studio, no ads, 10 beats a week with stems, 100 samples a week, unlimited Splitter and 20-effect FX chains. Max adds unlimited beats with stems, 500 samples a week, $50/month in Boost Credits to promote music and priority support.
AI Song Generator has no free plan. Creator is $9.99/month or $99/year with 800 credits, Pro is $19.99/month or $199/year with 1,800 credits, and Studio is $39.99/month or $399/year with 3,750 credits, refreshed monthly on every plan. A standard song request costs about 20 credits, and every action shows its cost before you confirm.
Stick with BandLab if
A song generator does not replace a studio. BandLab remains the better fit when:
- you record your own voice or instruments and want to arrange them track by track;
- you want a capable DAW at no cost, with cloud storage;
- you collaborate with bandmates in the same project;
- you want built-in mastering and distribution to streaming services;
- you need a phone app, or a desktop DAW through the Cakewalk tools.
Add AI Song Generator if
A generator earns its place when the blank page, not the mixing desk, is what slows you down:
- you want a full demo with a sung vocal from a written idea, without recording anything;
- you have lyrics but no band or singer to perform them;
- you want to upload a song you own and restyle it in another genre;
- you need stems, a vocal-free version or a WAV of a generated track to work on elsewhere;
- you want a lyric video or visualizer for the finished song.
Using a generator and a DAW together
A common workflow is to sketch the song in AI Song Generator, split the result into stems, and bring those stems into whichever DAW you use to record real parts over them and mix. We have not verified which audio file types BandLab imports or exports, so check its help pages before you plan around a specific format. On the Mac question, BandLab runs in a browser and offers desktop tools through Cakewalk, while AI Song Generator runs in any modern browser, Mac included, and has no native app.
Rights work differently in each. BandLab's Terms of Use say you keep ownership of content you submit while granting BandLab a broad licence to use it for the service, and BandLab Sounds may be used inside a larger composition but not on their own. We did not find terms specific to SongStarter or other AI output. On AI Song Generator, commercial use depends on your plan, our Terms, your inputs and applicable law, and we do not claim to grant ownership; our AI music copyright guide explains more. AI Song Generator uses third-party music generation models and does not publish audio-quality rankings, so judge generated songs by listening.
