Steps

How it works

  1. Choose one feeling

Longing, flirtation, a slow breakup or quiet confidence. R&B lands hardest when the whole song circles one emotion.

  2. Write or draft the lyrics

Paste your own words in Custom mode, or give the lyrics generator a brief of up to 200 characters and rewrite its draft.

  3. Set the groove and the voice

Name the tempo, the drums, the keys, the bass and the vocal tone in the style line.

  4. Polish the details

Replace a stiff chorus, extend the ending into an ad-lib outro, or split the finished song into stems.

The sound of modern R&B

R&B sits where soul, pop and hip-hop meet. Most of it is slow to mid-tempo, built on rich chords and a bass line that moves, with the lead vocal right at the center of the mix and everything else arranged to give it room.

  • Tempo: roughly 60 to 100 BPM; slow jams often use a half-time feel around 65 to 75.
  • Drums: crisp, sparse kits with finger snaps, rim shots and ticking hats, sometimes a deep 808 underneath.
  • Harmony: major sevenths, minor ninths and elevenths, and progressions borrowed from gospel and jazz.
  • Instruments: electric piano, warm synth pads, clean guitar licks, and sub bass or a melodic electric bass.
  • Vocals: close and breathy in the verses, stacked harmonies and ad-libs in the chorus, melodic runs at phrase ends.
  • Structure: verse, pre-chorus, chorus, a bridge that shifts key or mood, and a long fading outro.

Describing R&B in a prompt

In Simple mode, describe the song as a scene plus a sound: "a late-night R&B song about texting someone you should forget, slow groove, electric piano, soft breathy vocal". In Custom mode, your lyrics go in the lyrics box (up to 5,000 characters) and the production goes in the style line, for example "alternative R&B, 72 BPM, sparse snaps and rimshot, deep sub, warm Rhodes, intimate female vocal, stacked harmonies in the chorus".

Vocal words carry a lot of weight in this genre. Breathy, falsetto, smooth, raspy, gospel-trained, whispered and belted each change the take, so name a tone and an energy rather than a singer. Velvet Skyline, the demo on this page, shows the nocturnal end of the style: around 78 BPM, sub bass, sparse drums, guitar fragments and layered harmonies in the chorus.

Use the Exclude field for anything that would break the mood: rap verse, heavy autotune, EDM drop, rock guitar or big orchestral strings. If takes come back cluttered, exclude dense drums or fast hi-hat rolls too.

R&B sub-styles worth naming

Naming a sub-style is the fastest way to move the drums, the chords and the vocal approach together.

  • Neo-soul: live-sounding drums with a lazy swing, jazz chords, organic bass and an earthy vocal.
  • Alternative R&B: dark and spacious, moody synths and reverb, minimal drums.
  • 90s-style R&B: polished drum machines, lush keys and big group harmonies on the hook.
  • Trap soul: 808 bass and rolling hats under a melodic sung vocal.
  • Slow jam: a half-time ballad with a sparse arrangement and plenty of air around the voice.
  • Quiet storm: soft late-night grooves with smooth saxophone or guitar fills.

Lyric tips for R&B

Good R&B lyrics sound like someone talking at 2am: short phrases, details you can picture and a direct "you". Leave space at the end of lines so the vocal can stretch a vowel or add a run; long, crowded lines force the singer to rush and the groove loses its ease.

  • Label the parts with [Verse], [Pre-Chorus], [Chorus] and [Bridge] so the structure is clear.
  • Keep the chorus to two or four lines built around one repeated phrase.
  • Short words in parentheses, such as (stay) or (oh, oh), can come out as backing vocals or echoes.
  • Open vowels at line ends, as in "you", "low" and "stay", are easier to hold than tight consonants.
  • If you let the generator write, edit out stock phrases; AI drafts lean on "baby", "tonight" and "all night long".

Refining takes and knowing the limits

One request can return more than one variation, and with R&B the differences are mostly in the vocal: one take glides through a run, another overdoes the melisma. Pick the best performance first, then replace a single section if a chorus line feels stiff, or extend the ending to add an outro with ad-libs.

Tempo can drift slightly over a long song and harmonies sometimes blur in a busy mix, so listen through the whole take. Library tracks can be split into stems, or have the vocal removed if you want to sing the song yourself. The credit cost appears before each generation, and songs stay private until you share them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I make an R&B song with AI?
Describe the feeling, the tempo and the vocal tone in Simple mode, or paste lyrics in Custom mode with a style line for the production. Compare the variations and keep the strongest vocal.
How do I get harmonies and ad-libs?
Ask for stacked harmonies in the chorus and ad-libs in the style line, and write short ad-lib words in parentheses in your lyrics. Results vary between variations, so compare them.
The vocal runs are too much. How do I tone them down?
Add restrained, minimal runs or understated vocal to the style line and put excessive melisma in the Exclude field, then replace the section that overdoes it.
Can it sound like a famous R&B singer?
No. The vocal is an original AI voice and briefs naming real artists can be rejected. Describe the tone instead: breathy, smooth, raspy, falsetto or gospel-trained.
Can I release an R&B song made in the Studio?
That depends on your plan, the Terms, your inputs and the law where you publish. The AI music copyright guide explains the main questions.
